Mitchell Makoons

 

Mitchell Makoons (he/him) is a Roots/Rock musician from Brandon, Manitoba, who currently resides in Winnipeg. At the age of seven, Mitchell began playing the guitar to accompany his grandfather and brother as they played Metis fiddle tunes. Makoons continues to be an active member of the Manitoba Metis community and writes songs that combine traditional Ojibway music and culture with modern influences.

Makoons has toured several times across Western Canada and has begun to break into the Canadian festival scene. Over the last few years has performed at Dauphin’s Countryfest, Harvest Sun Music Festival, Gentlefest, and Trout Forest Music Festival, to name a few. In the fall of 2025 Mitchell toured Southern Australia presented by the Adelaide Guitar Festival.

Makoons released his debut album “Lady Boots” in April of 2024. Of the 8 tracks on the album, 4 have reached the top 10 on the Indigenous Music Countdown with “Courage” and “Changing Man” becoming his first and second No. 1’s. Mitchell’s music is spun frequently on Canadian and American radio and receives international play on Sirius XM. Since 2022, Makoons has been nominated for 15 Manitoba Country Music Awards and won the Emerging Artist of the Year Award in 2024, and Roots Artist of the Year in 2025

2 years ago I attended 2024 Manitoba Country Music awards with my cousin Desirée. That was the same year I won my first award - Emerging Artists of the year. As we were sitting there watching the awards being announced Desirée kept saying, "I should just go for it and do music for real." Well... 2 years of "doing music for real" later and she's nominated for 2 MCMA awards! Proud of this lady. I'm also nominated for 3.

Today I turned 10,000 days old. No one really celebrates stuff like this. But I've been keeping track since I was a kid. It's hard to put life into a few pictures, but here's a few favorites 1. My first guitar. My first show. 7 years old in the back of the old caravan, strumming along to the radio. 2. Proof 3. My big brother and I, circa 1999 4. Our families first kayak. The water was up to my knees, but it sure felt cool. You can see the rope my dad tied onto the front so we wouldn't get too far. 5. First fender guitar, first photoshoot 6.
